![]() The original libertins of seventeenth-century France risked prosecution and execution for their impulse to break social bonds, of the Church, especially. A libertine originally was something more than just a seducer-that may simply have been its easiest social manifestation. ![]() Valmont and Merteuil have something of the true mark of the libertine: the claim of their absolute freedom from divine and social law. Leo Damrosch titles his new biography of Casanova Adventurer, and Casanova was fully that, also a cardsharp, con man, sometime necromancer, utopian schemer, medical quack, who traveled all over Europe while most at home in his native Venice, though he spent a time imprisoned in the Leads of the Doge’s Palace, from which he escaped in his most sensational adventure (he wrote a book about it ).Ĭasanova was a libertine, of course, like the near contemporaneous Valmont and Madame de Merteuil of Choderlos de Laclos’ Les Liaisons dangereuses, and many a less distinguished eighteenth-century novel. He wrote in French, the language that would give his legend the widest circulation, and was published only after his death, in a reliable version only in our own time. Both Don Juan and Casanova have entered history as seducers, the former a mythical Spaniard, the latter real, though clearly devoted to making himself something of a legend in the 3,700 manuscript pages of his memoirs, the Histoire de ma vie. Not quite up to Don Giovanni’s numbers given in his valet Leporello’s famous catalogue, in Mozart’s opera, with its punchline: “Ma in Ispagna son già mille e tre ” (But in Spain there are already a thousand and three). Though the Void was eventually sealed, 33% of the world (and a presumably large portion of Nockfell's population) were consumed by the shadows completely.Giacomo Casanova counted sex with some 129 women over a period of thirty-nine years. Nockfell, along with most of the world, became infected by the Plague of Shadows in 2004 due to the machinations of the Devourers of God. Even then, Nockfell was subject to ominous occurrences and events during the Fisher's stay in the apartment building, including the disappearance of various students from Nockfell High. In 1992, Sal Fisher moved to Nockfell with his dad, residing in Addison Apartments. ![]() These fires were presumably started by the cult, most likely as part of their rituals. Throughout the decades, the mill would mysteriously catch fire numerous times. The factory would provide a majority of the town’s employment for approximately 7 decades. ![]() The Addisons then constructed an apartment complex, along with an underground extension of the cult's temple. When the Addison family arrived from overseas in 1887, Alyson Rosenberg, the youngest and last surviving member of her family, sold them her family’s land out of loneliness. However, the community at large managed to maintain the appearance of a quiet and peaceful town. Their actions are the source for numerous strange phenomena that have occurred in the town for decades, giving Nockfell a notorious reputation. Over the centuries, the cult would secretly practice their occult beliefs and rituals, gaining a supposedly large following both within the community and potentially nationwide. In 1663, Citlali Grey-the tribe’s seer-spoke a prophecy, bringing together a faction of the tribe and forming the cult known as the Devourers of God. In order to continue living on the land, the tribe made a deal with the beast which required them to make sacrifices to it. When people began disappearing, it was revealed the hunter had “become a beast” and was eating people. When the hunter returned, he told the tribe of the lake, and soon the entire tribe had migrated there. According to legend, the tribe witnessed an unusual light while walking through the forest and sent their strongest hunter to investigate. The town of Nockfell was established in approximately 1623 when a Native American tribe known as the Greys settled around Wendigo Lake.
